Shepherdess Cottage Reviews

Nicola
This was our second visit to Shepherdess cottage. The cottage was still kept to high standards as the first visit, lovely furnishings modern and clean, has everything u need. Meg the owner was always on hand in case of any questions. The location of the property is great Black Bull pub just on the doorstep.serves lovely homecooked food and plenty of other places to eat and drink 5 mins walk away. Unfortunately the weather was not kind to us but we still managed to get out with the dogs amd enjoyied the use of the hot tub Would definitely recommend
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Shepherdess Cottage. The care and thought that has gone in to the design of the place is evident. It is designed to a high standard and the property just makes you feel at home. Meg, the owner, was very friendly and helpful and even left a thoughtful welcome pack for us on arrival. The cottage is ideally located, just off the end of the main street. With parking available for most of our stay, right outside the front door. The rear garden area is also secure for any four legged guests. Moffat itself is Lovely little village, the main street is like going back in time, no chain stores just a good selection of local shops and businesses. There is an excellent selection of places to eat with the Black Bull being within 60 seconds walk from the front door of the cottage.the people we met as well were all lovely, friendly and welcoming. The only reason we didnt score it 5 for everything was i personally found the bed and pillows to be a little too firm for my personal preference. We would highly recommend a stay at Shepherdess Cottage and if we ever return to Moffat it will be the first place we check for availability Karen and Gary
A nice property in a great location. We had a few niggles to start with in trying to get the heating right needing one bedroom to be cooler for a menopausal lady! and making the hot tub bubbles come on but once Meg pointed us in the right direction everything was good from there.
Michelle
Moffat is lovely. Enjoyed the hot tub, games and the location of cottage. Half eaten ice cream left in freezer from previous guests. No guest handbook. Heating was on a timer so couldn't change ourselves. Complained to owner who didn't think it was a problem for cleaner not to remove half eaten food and who also had to boost the heating remotely as we were unable to. Starter pack for fire not equipped. Left a day early was absolutely freezing. Sykes were not helpful and I received contradictory information from different customer advisors, totally disregarded everything I had said though I have proof of correspondence with owner regarding my issues. Will never book with Sykes again.
Fantastic location, pretty cottage, homely, cosy with everything needed for a relaxing winter break. Hot tub was wonderful, didnt realise sitting outside in a jacuzzi in December could be so relaxing. The outside courtyard was very nice. Property wasnt as clean and well prepared as we hoped earplugs left on floor from previous resident in the bedroom, inside mats quite dirty, some areas of the kitchen not very clean. No loo roll and shower dispensers left empty host did apologise for both of these items. A few minor gripes property quite noisey at night road noise quite intrusive, lights difficult to control couldnt find the switches! We only found a cupboard containing extra glasses and bowls when leaving perhaps add this to visitor info, as door is disguised. Some more wood for the log burner would have been nice, but it did burn very fast no obvious controls to turn down log burner and the door needed a very firm push to close properly potentially dangerous for fumes to come into the house. Rear door quite difficult to close and lock. The property was clearly an easy 1010, but now aging a little and could do with a bit of TLC to get back to this rating. But we had a lovely stay!
Firstly I wan5to say Meg the owner is a fantastic lady if you ever need to contact her. I give an honest opinion as Im an honest person Pros absolutely beautiful cottage , everything so modern, plenty dishes, cutlery, and other utensils. Massive fridge freezer, amazing big range and an oven microwave that does everything. Dishwasher , amazing big fireplace, downstairs bedroom was great for us , went upstairs for a look OMG just out of this world never used upstairs at all , no need to . Bathroom with shower good , please not window doesnt shut as its a safety thing , rear garden big enough for my 2 small dogs to play , also opened up rear gate and they ran about out in a bare bit of land , looked secure, and pie sta resistantance the hot tub , room enough for 68 people , only the 2 of us , but set at 40C and when you put on the massaging and lights at night , great laying there looking up at the stars. Now Cons I contacted Mel regarding a time to get in normally 5pm which is a bit late on your first day , usually 3 pm , but we got in at 4pm , when I told Mel about some cleanliness issues she was so apologetic as the cleaner she usually uses is not well and got temporary one in need to buck up their ideas and sent Mel photos to back up issues we put on the self cleaning button on the microwave because it was a bit greasy inside and after that it was spotless, hoover full to the top , and washing machine powder drawer black , also fireplace not cleaned out . But these were very minor issues , only one more thing please get a real gate put up to stop dogs going upstairs, this big heavy piece of wood is no use , when I tried to remove it I dropped it on my toes , so ended up standing on a kitchen chair to get over it , if a really older person booked this they would have no chance of lifting it away . And last thing front garden a mess with weeds , I looked at next doors garden , nice wee table and chairs out and very tidy . Will I go back yes please if Mel will have us , Moffat is a great little town , nice shops and pubs
What a fantastic property and exactly as listed. It felt luxurious and was in a fantastic position with shops, eateries and lots of walks on your doorstep. Comfortable beds and the hot tub was an added bonus.Meg was very helpful and prompt with her responses and sorted the one problem we had with a shower the same day. It was a great place to stay with our dog as so many cafes, restaurants and shops allowed them in our favourite was Brodies which was almost next door. We hope to stay again as it was just so ideal.
Carole
We stayed at the cottage for 7 nights. First impression of the property was WOW!!! You have everything you need at this very well equipped cottage! Super comfy beds, fantastic walk in rain showers, very comfy sofa and the most wonderful, hot, log barbering fire!! The cottage was really warm with just the central heating if you wish not to use the log burner. Meg the owner is just the most lovely, approachable lady and if you have any queries regarding anything she is on easily contactable and answers your messages promptly! Welcome gifts were very much appreciated! Fresh milk and doggy treats on arrival!. So if you are thinking about booking this cottage, don't hesitate because you won't be disappointed. Just like the pictures if not better!!!! We will definitely be returning in the future!. Thank you so much Meg for making our stay special. X
Property could do with some tlc. Clear instructions of where things can be found need to be included. Outside cushions should be removed daily, a box to store them should be provided because when we arrived cushions were saturated so unusable. Coat hooks for towels and robes near hot tub would be useful. Visit info folder also needs updating as there was lack of info about places to visit. Contact with the owner could have been better. Overall stay was disappointing.
Diarmid
Fantastic cottage with a great location to the town. This place was brilliant and beautiful from the start, big open space with beautiful outside garden to wind down and relax. Surrounded by restaurants and bars all within 5mins walk. Just perfect altogether
Yvonne
Beautiful immaculate cottage with comfortable beds. Ideal location in the centre for eating out and as a base for daytrips further afield. Would definitely recommend.
The shepherdess cottage is beautiful, Meg is super helpful and brought us a wonderful welcome gift. Close to all amenities, lovely cafes and great walks.
Christine
What a. Beautiful property. Our stay was great. The walkability was awesome. Highly recommend.
Absolutely amazing place to stay. Meg is the perfect host and on hand for any issues that arise. This is our second visit to The Shepherdess Cottage and both times have been fantastic. Cleanliness perfect, kitchen amazing and outdoor area wonderful. Will definately be back. Thank you Meg for looking after us.
Neville
Only downside was previous weather must have destroyed the garden canopy so ... Only downside was previous weather must have destroyed the garden canopy so garden was off limits when it rained ,,,otherwise fabulous cottage probably the best we have stayed in
Angela
We have just enjoyed a great week at the shepherdess cottage. From the outside it looks like a traditional cosy cottage once inside you are greeted with beautiful modern living room and kitchen with everything you need. The property is in a fantastic location with shops and many lovely places to eat and drink on your doorstep. We would definitely recommend shepherdess cottage.
Absolutely amazing expertly designed cottage in Moffat. Layout is stunning with beautiful kitchen extension leading to paved garden with hot tub. Kitchen has everything you would need for a break away. Stunning upstairs bedroom with amazing walk in shower and bath, comfortable well laid out ground floor bedroom with walk in shower and toilet. Cleanliness deserves a 10 out of 10! Meg, the lady who looks after the property is easily contacted and looks after every fine detail. Now our second time of booking and we will definately return. Our perfect home from home! Thank you to the owners for giving us the privilege of renting their beautiful property and to Meg for looking after us!!!! J
Christine
This is a bold little cottage! The inside is not like the outside. Decorated to a really high standard with lots of quirky bits and pieces but also has everything you'll need for a great stay. The amazing Sky Glass and surround sound in the living area makes for a fab night in and the kitchen let's you cook both big or small with the help of a built in ovengrillmicrowave to compliment the huge gas hob and oven. The comfort of the beds is luxurious and the roomy showers are an explosion of force and warmth. Highly recommend.
Had a wonderful stay at shepherdess cottage in Moffat. The cottage is very stylish and well equipped. Moffat is a lovely town as well.
Debbie
Stayed for a week over Christmas 2024. Lovely and well equipped cottage that was decorated for Christmas. Welcome hamper was provided which was a nice surprise. Kitchen area spacious with a large amount of personal cupboard space available. Living area cosy with wall mounted TV and log burner. Both bedrooms and bathrooms well presented. Stair gate appreciated to stop dogs going to upstairs bedroom. On road parking at the front of the property was never a problem. Enclosed patio area at the rear. Very dog friendly. Overall with the exception of the wet weather a great stay was had at Shepherdess Cottage.
Fabulous. Just a beautiful property. Living room wonderful, kitchen wonderful, bathrooms wonderful. It's just all wonderful. Yards from nearest pub and shops, although I believe that pub shuts from 1st December to 1st March. There are other pubs but we did not try them. Road noise can be a bit noisy during the night but a small price force property this good. I'd recommend buying a good supply of logs on the way. The welcome logs only lasted an hour, and the large bag we bought for the remaining 4 days only lasted 2 days. So you don't want to be buying the small bags from the petrol stations. And you don't want to not be using the wonderful burner underneath the massive tv. Hot tub also fantastic. Found some nice dog walks right out of the front door. Moffat is a nice town and the people are nice too. 5 recommendation from me !
Louise
What an absolute delight it was to stay in the Shepherdess Cottage. The decor and furnishings were tasteful, well thought out, beautiful and comfortable. From the luxurious towels to the bath robes. The cottage was spotless and in a great position for ambling around the village. A big thank you to Meg for giving us the run down before we arrived. Plus the bags, dog treats and refreshments when we arrived. Would definitely recommend
Madeline
What an amazing cottage, Meg certainly has all bases covered! Excellent location, extremely comfortable and very dog friendly. A fantastic base for local exploration with some great dog friendly restaurants nearby. We visited with my parents and the layout of the cottage gave us our separate personal spaces as well as great living and kitchen areas. And the hottub was an amazing treat at the end of the day adventuring or at the start of the day before getting started. Highly recommend
Claire
We loved our stay at the Sheperdess Cottage! ! The property is stunning, and has everything you need. There is nothing they havent thought of!! The bed was so comfortable, just what we needed after long walks with the dogs. A great location, walking distance to shops, pubs and restaurants. Very dog friendly, we would definitely stay here again!!
Well appointed cottage in a great location. Generally a good stay, but some of the decor and furnishings could do with a refreshmaintenance, as they are showing signs of wear and tear. Also, a bit more attention to the cleaning as there were plenty of cobwebs and dust on lampsartificial plants etc. There is no mirror at all in the downstairs bedroom which was impractical. The owner wasn't particularly responsive to messages to get code for key safe or answer a few queries before arrival. They were actually in the property after the 4pm checkin time. Beds are very comfortable so we were well rested and the hot tub is very clean as someone comes midweek and again at the end of the stay to check it and clean it. There are plenty of cafes, bars and restaurants within walking distance of the cottage and several are dog friendly.
We had a lovely stay at Shepherdess Cottage. The location was excellent and Meg had thought of everything that we might need. The cottage was beautiful and we would certainly stay again.
Claire
Had a lovely week at the cottage. It was exactly as described and photographed. Moffat was a lovely town, Spice India takeaway was delicious, however a korma was very spicy and the Moffat Chippy was the best for fish and chips. Behind the cottage towards the entrance of the campsite there is woodfired pizzas on a Friday and Saturday which were delicious, 4 pizzas were only 30. Lots of nice walks in the area and owners were on hand for info. More cutlery is needed especially when dishwashers was on.
Christine/John
The property was fantastic and we loved it. My dad had a fall and the owner was very supportive and understanding, we really appreciate that. We look forward to retuning to the cottage at some point
Claire
What a beautiful cottage! It had everything we wanted. Lots of useful kitchen equipment, a lovely hot tub, comfortable beds, top end decor, secure garden for the dog and a covered patio for when it rained. It also had a gas BBQ which we didnt use because of the weather. Theres TVs in every room with a fabulous sound system and the WiFi is reliable. The cottage is so close to several pubs, cafes and restaurants that we barely used the kitchen! The ground floor bedroom and shower room would be great for less mobile guests, also. The surrounding countryside is wonderful and there are numerous little towns and villages within an easy drive to explore. We only wish wed had more time there. Thanks to Meg for your information, extra little treats and your warm welcome!
Cottage was nice and spacious, although living area and bedroom dull lighting, good kitchen nice slabbed back for dogs
An absolutely outstanding property which definitely will not disappoint. It has everything that you could possibly wish for and so much more. It is luxurious but this is combined with such a homely feel. The location is fantastic with all shops and cafes within walking distance to the cottage. We had 2 dogs with us and the enclosed back garden was safe to let them both roam about in. The surrounding area has fantastic walks with lots of woods and water to splash about in. On return from walking the hot tub was such a welcome luxury and we enjoyed it every day. Meg the owner is fantastic and made us feel so welcome. She could not have done more to make our stay enjoyable. My only gripe is that we were only there for 4 nights which definitely wasnt long enough. We will definitely return to this wee gem of a cottage xx
My wife and I had a lovely 4 night break at Shepherdess Cottage. It was in a great location within minutes of good shops, restaurants and hotels. The cottage was very well equipped and very clean. The owner Meg done everything she could to ensure we had a thoroughly enjoyable stay. Any queries or concerns we had Meg delt with them promptly and courteously. The hot tub was great and secluded. All in all we had a lovely stay and Moffat is a very friendly place. We would definitely return, thank you Meg for all you done for us.
Nicola
Just returned from a week at the cottage . The cottage is furnished and decorated to a high standard, the owners have certainly gone the extra mile to provide the wow factor. Upon arrival it was spotless clean and very welcoming. The cottage has everything that you could possibly need the owners have listened to the previous guests requests and provided requested items ie mirror and hairdryer. The outside courtyard was great for our 2 dogs fully enclosed so no worries with let them out. Hot tub was great especially after a day of walking. Meg the owner was on hand to answer questions we had on the first day. The cottage is located on a busy road but we had no issues with sleeping during the night. We were able to park right outside the cottage all week except Saturday when we had gone out in the car and returned to find the park spaces full but we found a spot across the road. Location is great Black Bull pub right on the doorstep we had food there a couple of times was really good. Lots of other places for food and drink in the village. Overall a great cottage and would definitely return if we go back to Moffat
We stayed for 3 nights and had a lovely time. The owner Meg, is extremely helpful and thoughtful. A really nice location and everything thought pf you would need.
Had a lovely week's stay in the cottage. The house is decorated to a high standard, it is larger than it appears in the photos and the winding staircase gives it so much character. Thank you for the shortbread on arrival they went down a treat. The sofa in the living room was so comfortable, it was difficult to get up after. The hot tub is very large, and could easily fit up to six people in it. The town of Moffat, while small has lots to do, it has plenty of cafes and pubs. There is an outlet shop 5 minutes away from the cottage with a lovely cafe, but be warned you can buy some stuff cheaper in other shops in the town. The toffee shop is also worth a visit to try some Irn Bru fudge. Some things to note about the cottage, it is located on a main road, so could be quite noisy with HGV's passing in the night. Parking is located on the street, but we never had an issue parking outside the cottage. A dressing table would be useful in the house as there was nowhere to do my hair and makeup and a hairdryer would also be useful. A guest book would be appreciated as I enjoy reading other people's recommendations of places to visit. In the information booklet it says you can connect your phone to the TV speakers in the room, however, when we attempted this the TV froze. When we contacted the owner asking how to resolve this, we were told not to connect our phone to the TV, so this needs amending in the information book as it is misleading. After leaving the property we were contacted by Sykes to say we would need to pay an extra fee for additional cleaning to the hot tub. This was surprising as we were present as the hot tub was refilled, and there didn't seem to be an issue. After 5 days we received another message from Sykes to say the matter had been closed with no information provided. This caused unnecessary stress and put a negative end to an otherwise enjoyable holiday.
