Moffat Guide

Moffat's cottages with hot tubs offer a perfect Scottish Borders getaway. The historic spa town sits nestled in stunning Dumfries and Galloway countryside, with properties ranging from cosy couples' retreats to large group accommodations sleeping 10+.

The area boasts impressive Trip Advisor attractions including the Devil's Beef Tub (4.5/5) and Moffat Toffee Shop (4.5/5). Grey Mare's Tail Nature Reserve (4.5/5) features a spectacular 60-metre waterfall just 10 miles from town.

Moffat has a fascinating past as Scotland's first Dark Sky Town, with street lighting specially designed to reduce light pollution for stargazing. Robert Burns frequently visited The Buccleuch Arms Hotel, writing several poems during his stays.

Self-catering cottages provide excellent value compared to hotels, especially for families or groups. Many properties feature enclosed gardens, wood-burning stoves and those all-important private hot tubs for evening relaxation under Moffat's star-filled skies.

Sightseeing

Moffat sits in a prime location for exploring southern Scotland. The town itself features stunning architecture including the Star Hotel, listed in the Guinness Book of Records as the narrowest hotel in Britain at just 20ft wide!

Grey Mare's Tail Nature Reserve (DG10 9LH, open daily) ranks as the area's top natural attraction (4.5/5 TripAdvisor). The 60-metre waterfall creates a spectacular backdrop for walks, with chances to spot peregrine falcons and wild goats. The moderate hike to Loch Skeen above the waterfall takes about 1 hour each way.

Drumlanrig Castle (DG3 4AQ, open April-August, 10am-5pm) sits 25 miles west of Moffat. This 17th-century pink sandstone castle houses an impressive art collection including works by Rembrandt and Leonardo da Vinci. The gardens and woodland walks score 4.5/5 on TripAdvisor.

Don't miss the Moffat Museum (DG10 9HG, open Tuesday-Sunday, 10am-4pm) for fascinating local history. It's small but packed with exhibits about the town's wool trade and spa heritage (4/5 TripAdvisor).

Pet Friendly

Many Moffat cottages welcome dogs, often with enclosed gardens and dog-friendly features. We've found local businesses are exceptionally accommodating to four-legged visitors too.

The Buccleuch Arms Hotel (DG10 9ET) allows dogs in the bar area where you can enjoy meals without leaving your pet behind. The Rumblin Tum Café (DG10 9HL) even offers dog treats alongside your coffee.

For walks, Station Park provides a convenient town-centre green space with a dedicated dog exercise area. More adventurous hikers should try the Annandale Way which passes through Moffat with sections suitable for all fitness levels.

The Moffat Woollen Mill (DG10 9PH) welcomes well-behaved dogs throughout their store, perfect if you need to pick up supplies or gifts. Remember to pack towels for your cottage hot tub area - muddy paws after countryside walks are inevitable!

Top 3 attractions you have to see in Moffat

The Devil's Beef Tub (DG10 9LT) tops our must-visit list. This dramatic 500ft deep hollow got its name when Border Reivers used it to hide stolen cattle. The viewpoint requires a short uphill walk but rewards with spectacular panoramas across the hills. One visitor described it as "breathtaking in all weathers" and we agree completely.

Moffat Toffee Shop (DG10 9HU, open Monday-Saturday 9am-5pm) represents a sweet-tooth's paradise. The famous Moffat Toffee has been made here since 1888 using the original recipe. Try the distinctive black and white striped sweets with their unique tangy centre. TripAdvisor reviewers consistently rate it 4.5/5, with one calling it "a nostalgic step back in time."

Gallow Hill (DG10 9LR) offers the best stargazing spot in town. As Scotland's first Dark Sky Town, Moffat installed special street lighting to reduce light pollution. On clear nights, the Milky Way stretches visibly across the sky. The Astronomical Society occasionally runs public events here. One visitor commented: "I've never seen so many stars - even better viewing from our cottage hot tub afterwards!"
